What Is a Drip Edge? Do I need drip edge on my roof
Drip edge is the thin strip of metal along the edges of your roof. While often overlooked, a drip edge can play a crucial role in protecting your roof and home from water damage. Lets explore what drip edge is, its importance, installation, and maintenance tips.
What Is a Drip Edge?
Drip edge is a narrow strip of metal installed along the edges of a roof, typically where the roof meets the fascia board. It is designed to direct water away from the fascia and into the gutter system. Drip edge helps prevent water from seeping under the roofing materials or behind the fascia. We have seen thousands of roofs where drip edge could have prevented soffit damage.
Importance of a Drip Edge
1. Water Protection: Drip Edge is designed to channel water away from the roof edges. Preventing water from pooling or dripping down the fascia, drip edge helps protect against water damage to the roof deck and fascia boards.
2. Edge Protection: Drip edge provides a protective barrier along the roof edges from wind-driven rain, ice dams, and other weather elements. We often find that drip edge helps maintain the roofing system and extend its lifespan.
3. Prevents Pest Entry: In addition to water protection, a properly installed drip edge can deter small animals, insects, and debris from entering the roof structure. Having unwanted animals chew through the fascia is never fun

Installation of Drip Edge
Installing drip edge is typically done during the initial roof installation or replacement.
1. Preparation: Before installation, clean the roof deck and fascia of any debris. Trim any overhanging roofing materials or underlayment as needed.Typically we install drip edge over felt this way all drip edge is visible for a inspection. Drip edge with ice and water shield ontop may be required in certain ice situations or lower slop applications.
2. Positioning: The drip edge is positioned along the eaves (lower edge) and gables (sloped edges) of the roof. It should extend slightly over the edge of the roof and fit snugly against the fascia board. Drip edge should always be overlapped 2" minimum.
3. Fastening: Nail placement on drip edge should be every 8" 10". Typically we find 1 1/4" roofing nails or 1" Felt Tabs the best for secruring drip edge onto a wooden deck. Proper fastening makes sure the drip edge remains attached during harsh weather conditions.
Maintenance Tips for Drip Edges
To maintain the effectiveness of your drip edge and prolong its lifespan, consider the following maintenance tips:
Inspect Roof Regularly: Periodically inspect the roof and drip edge for signs of damage. Mainly keep the roof clean of debris so water can flow into the gutters unimpeded
Clean Gutters: Keep gutters clean and free of debris for proper water flow from the drip edge into the gutter system.
Repair Promptly: Address any damage or issues with the roof system promptly to prevent water infiltration and potential roof damage.
